90. ‘First Day of My Life’ by Bright Eyes (2005)

Conor Oberst has done a bit of a reverse Alicia Keys.  While I can accept that he’ll never again be as exciting as he was on the lightning-bottling Fevers and Mirrors, he seems to have softened his more interesting edges and settled down into being simply an earnest singer/songwriter, producing material that all sounds more or less the same and throws few curveballs.  He may be lacking a sense of urgency these days, but his emotional expressiveness remains intact, and the tentative hopefulness of First Day of My Life (currently being misappropriated by the Halifax) is as moving as anything he’s done.
